News and music to start your week!

Congratulations to the winners of the 2019 International Alliance for Women in Music (IAWM) Search for New Music Competition!  See the full press release at the IAWM Website.

Lidiya Yankovskaya writes for New Music Box about Shaping the American Operatic Canon – a topic that is apropos to the conversations we’ve been having generally in this country, and specifically to our recently revised list of 500+ operas composed by women.

And in the same vein, Missy Mazzoli was interviewed by The Guardian about her opera Breaking the Waves, which is being performed at the Edinburgh International Festival.  Read on here.

Also in The Guardian, a nine-year-old girl is suing Berlin’s oldest boys’ choir (which is state-funded) for discrimination. The NYTimes also covered this story.  The issue is allowing girls equal access to an important means of music education.

Read another fantastic interview from  Frank Oteri at New Music Box, this one with composer Juliana Hall, pictured above.  Read more at the website, and catch a preview of the conversation in the video below:

The Nashville Symphony is having a Clara Schumann Festival — Sept. 10-21st, concerts, live broadcasts, and (on the 21st) a performance of Clara’s powerful Piano Concerto.

AND — the application for our Performance Grants is now live!  Help us spread the word, make sure that your favorite orchestras — professional, youth and community — know about it!  Completed applications are due October 25!
