Costa Rican orchestra features women composers

The Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional (OSN — National Symphony Orchestra) of Costa Rica presents a tribute to women composers on June 14 and 16, 2019. The concert is conducted by Gabriela Mora Fallas (pictured left), returning for her second time to lead the orchestra; for her first time, two years ago, she received a National Award from the Ministry of Culture and Youth. The city of Bonn has hosted an annual Schumannfest since 1998 to celebrate the lives and music of two of the city’s most famous residents: Robert Schumann and Ludwig van Beethoven.  However, in 2007 the name of the festival changed from the Bonn Schumann Festival to Schumannfest, “to illustrate the core concerns of the festival: the memory of Robert and Clara Schumann.”  Robert spent the last two years of his life in the city, and he and Clara are buried in the Old Cemetery in Bonn. Musicians in Bonn, Germany celebrated the 200th birthday of Clara Schumann with Schumannfest!  The event, which runs from June 1 to June 16, will include works by many women composers, not just Clara.  However, there will be a special focus on her anniversary year, including two biographical films the will be screened at the festival and a play titled Clara.  Read on here.
