On January 31, 2019, renowned musicologist Dr. Nancy B. Reich passed away at the age of 94. Her obituary is available via the New York Times. Dr. Reich was a tremendous advocate for music by women, and particularly a champion of pianist/composer Clara Schumann. Her influential book Clara Schumann: The Artist and the Woman won the ASCAP – Deems Taylor Award and was the first scholarly biography of a woman composer.

In 2012, WPA awarded Dr. Reich our AMY Award for Lifetime Achievement in Music Scholarship. On June 9, 2019, WPA President Liane Curtis announced the formation of the Nancy B. Reich Fund, for an annual performance grant to an orchestra in support of a performance of a major work by a woman, possibly Clara Schumann or one of the many other hundreds of women whose music is deserving of more performances. The Fund is administrated as part of our Performance Grants.
