Unsuk Chin (b. 1961) was born in Seoul, Korea, but is based out of Berlin, Germany. A student of Ligeti, her talent was recognized early, winning several compositional awards while she was still in her 20s. The honors continue to this day, including the Arnold Schoenberg prize (2005) and the Music Composition Prize of the Prince Pierre Foundation (2010).

Chin’s works range from chamber pieces to operas, and also include electronic compositions.  She has stated that she draws inspiration and influence from many composers, including: Debussy, Bartok, Stravinsky, Webern, and others. She is heavily commissioned and her works are performed internationally.

Just last week Chin was honored with a composer’s portrait featuring a range of her works at the Miller Theatre at Columbia University.  The New York Times covered the event—be sure to read the review.  (You can learn more about the concert series here.)
