Opera American has announced the 2022 winners of their Discovery grants. Eight women composers will receive grants to support the development of new opera and music-theater works: Layale Chaker, Ashi Day, Susan Kander, Anne Leilehua Lanzilotti, Pamela Madsen, Rachel J. Peters, Amber Vistein, and Alyssa Weinberg. WE can’t wait to hear (and see) the new works!
And more excitement — from PBS (Public Broadcasting in the U.S.)! Amy Beach is featured the latest episode of “Now Hear This,” hosted by violinist Scott Yoo. Louise Farrenc and Clara Schumann are also included. The next episode will feature Florence Price!
And speaking of PBS, we’ve mentioned The Conductor, the new documentary about Marin Alsop, which premiered March 25. The film is available for streaming on the PBS Great Performances website until April 22. AND if you are near Santa Cruz, CA, there’s an April 14 opportunity to hear Alsop in person, discussing the film after a screening – the event is a benefit for a local youth music program, El Sistema Santa Cruz.
Dr Samantha Ege’s latest CD is available now on the Lorelt label — featuring the first edited recording of the 1912 piano concerto by Black composer Helen Hagan — which survives ONLY in its two-piano version. It also includes the first recording of the two-piano version of Florence Price’s Piano Concerto in One Movement. The moving and groundbreaking CD also includes works by Margaret Bonds, Nora Holt, and Betty Jackson King.
