News and Music to start your week!

Listening to Ladies has a new episode – this week talking to composer Jenn Kirby.  Find out more information about Kirby and her works on the website (which also has information on how to help make sure more episodes happen!) and stream the conversation below:

Los Angeles Magazine reports on a new fellowship program designed specifically to help young musicians of color prepare for positions in professional orchestras.

Crossing Borders Music has put out a call for African American women composers.  They are planning a chamber music concert in March 2019.

As you celebrate Halloween this week, you can also celebrate the life and work of composer Elizabeth Luytens,  who (in addition to concert music) composed dozens of scores for horror movies!  Read our blog post about her here.

And, BTW, Lutyens is one of the composers featured in Music Theory Examples by Women’s set of 12 posters by UK artist Margit van der Zwan.  We hope the posters will soon be decorating music classrooms the world over!

Maija Einfelde‘s Lux aeterna, for mixed chorus (and optional percussion) is being performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the first of two Latvian works performed this year to mark the centenary of the country’s independence. The final performance is on Tuesday, details here.  You can listen here (performed by the Latvian Radio Choir).
