Some news to start your week!

As we talk about inclusiveness of women, we must also address topics of race.  Over the summer the Metropolitan Opera decided to ban the use of blackface in performances of Otello.  This week Anne Midgette of The Washington Post spoke to several opera singers about the practice and the presence – or lack thereof – of diversity on opera stages.  Read the long version here.  (The shorter print-edition can be read here.)

Last week The Late Show with Stephen Colbert featured a symphony orchestra performing music from the video game The Legend of Zelda.  Though there is much to say about the popularity of video game music (and how some argue that it is “saving” orchestras) it was great to see a full ensemble featured on TV – with conductor Amy Andersson at the baton!
