The Los Angeles Times has the list of Grammy Nominees for classical music. Included for Best Classical Composition are Jennifer Higdon’s Harp Concerto, Caroline Shaw’s Orange, and Julia Wolfe’s Fire In My Mouth. Congratulations to all three composers!
And did you read Tamara Cashour’s insightful review (on our website) of the recent concert by the Symphony of the City of New York that featured music by Sophie-Carmen Eckhardt-Gramatté and Galina Ustvolskaya?
A lot is happening in the world of opera, with the premiere of Juana, the new opera composed by Carla Lucero about the 17th c. nun, poet and polymath, in Los Angeles; the Vienna State opera will perform its first opera by a woman, by Olga Neuwirth (based on Virginia Woolf’s Orlando); and Chaya Czernowin’s opera Heart Chamber received a Deutsche Oper Berlin premiere.
But it’s not all good news — in the Twittersphere, Michelle (@NClassiqueckia) notes that only 7 of the 368 albums nominated for the International Classical Music Awards (ICMA) for 2020 include any music by women. 🙁 And it’s not because there aren’t albums out there –Michelle finds 140 albums from 2019 that are entirely music by women (or a woman), not to mention the many more that include works by women as part of their contents.
