Congratulations to the 2019 WPA Grant Winners!

The 2019 WPA Performance Grant cycle was our most exciting – and most challenging – so far! We had a record breaking 92 applicants and all of the judges were impressed with the variety of engaging programs that are planned for the coming years! Unfortunately, difficult decisions needed to be made in offering funding, as we were not able to offer awards to every applicant. As in years past, the judges gave preference to ensembles that planned to perform two works by women composers, with one of those works being from a historic composer. Judges were also looking for engaging outreach and enrichment opportunities – whether they were as elaborate as in-person conversations with composers or scholars, or as simple as a YouTube video conversation with the ensemble’s conductor discussing the work in advance of the concert.

The current group of winners includes a groundbreaking range of performances with a mix of historic and contemporary composers, and educational outreach opportunities that will thrill and and charm new and returning audiences. As we think about ways to #ListenWider in the future, the judges are thrilled to be able to support these ensembles and their endeavors to broaden the impact of orchestral music in their communities.

In the coming year, we ask everyone to look for ways that you can help support our efforts to encourage exciting, diverse and inclusive programming so that we can increase the total funding available in the coming year!
