News and music to start your week!
In sad, but perhaps not surprising news, The Guardian reports that according to the Musicians Union, half of its members have received harassment at work, and a significant percentage of those who chose to leave their careers in music do so because of the abuse and sexism.
Soprano Julia Bullock is forging a new career for herself outside of the traditional expectations of an operatic singer. Read about her new approach to music through curating, her experiences working outside of the standard repertoire, and what she plans next in a profile in The New York Times.
Musicologist Doug Shadle poses five questions to composer Wu Fei, pictured above, at I Care If You Listen.
The Dallas Observer writes about the current state of women in classical music and the work being done at the Dallas Symphony to change the status quo.
More exciting events celebrating the Clara Schumann bicentennial: Victoria Bond’s opera “Clara” will be given a concert performance in a chamber version, Fri. Nov. 8 in New York City, and then on Sun. Nov. 10 in Rheinbeck NY. The opera was premiered (in fully staged performances) in the spring of this year by musicians of the Berliner Philharmoniker in the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, and received an enthusiastic reception (such as this radio feature, that you can read if you prefer).
