Huge news from the Metropolitan Opera which, for the first time in history, is commissioning new operas by women composers. Missy Mazzoli has been approached to write an opera based on George Saunders’s Lincoln in the Bardo. The Met will also perform Jeanine Tesori’s opera Grounded. In our Repertoire Report for this season we noted that the Dallas Symphony did not schedule any works by women composers in their regular concert season. However, this past weekend they did perform one work in a not subscription concert – Grażyna Bacewicz’s Concerto for String Orchestra. The Dallas Observer has more.
