The Music Critics Association of North America has named composer Missy Mazzoli and librettist Royce Vavrek’s new opera, Breaking the Waves, the first winner of a new award for Best New Opera in North America. Read more at Classical Voice North America.
Congratulations to Lidiya Yankovskaya who was just named the new Music Director for Chicago Opera Theater! Yanokovskaya has extensive conducting experience – including being one of the inaugural participants of Dallas Opera’s Hart Institute for Women Conductors. Read on at the Chicago Tribune.
Congratulations are also owed to Dina Gilbert who was juts named the Music Director of the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra in British Columbia. Read more on the KSO website.
The Association of British Orchestras (ABO) Trust was able to establish a new fund, Sirens, thanks to a generous donation from Diana Ambache. The funding was established to “raise awareness and appreciation of the music written by historical women from around the world.” Learn more about the fund here and read the press release here about the first awards that were granted – with performances by Marie Antonia Walpurgis, Dame Ethel Smyth, Germaine Tailleferre, and Dorothy Howell to be anticipated in the coming year!
