Two opera-themed topics today —
The opera Sanctuary Song is in its final weekend at Tapestry Opera in Toronto. The beautiful, one-hour production, designed for all ages, is about an elephant who journeys from circus performer to being released in a nature sanctuary. Based on a true story, the composer is Abigail Richardson-Schulte, and the librettist is Marjorie Chan 陳以珏. We hope this opera will be taken up by other companies!

Veteran opera conductor Sara Jobin is offering a four-week long online class “Opera and the Climate Crisis,” starting May 28. “This class is based on years of research; the purpose of the class is to share information and best practices from companies around the world who have been tackling this issue for decades.” “The climate crisis will become more urgent every day for the rest of our lives. Music can help us process overwhelming emotions, such as climate anxiety and climate grief. Climate communications is a storytelling problem, and opera is storytelling through music.”
