Throw-Back Thursday! The Women’s Philharmonic received this historic commendation from Board of Supervisors of San Francisco, on Dec. 10, 1998.
WHEREAS, The Women’s Philharmonic is recognized locally and nationally as the only orchestra of its kind, dedicated to the promotion of women composers, conductors, and performers, and,
WHEREAS, The Women’s Philharmonic, over its 17-year history, has served as the voice of women in classical music by commissioning works from today’s leading composers, providing career support to women composers and conductors, reconstructing historical masterworks by women, and promoting these works to orchestras across the country and around the world; and,
WHEREAS, The Women’s Philharmonic recognizes that freedom of artistic expression is a basic human right, and, as such, should be free from gender bias and political oppression; and,
WHEREAS, The Women’s Philharmonic, in an historic partnership with Amnesty International, will present a concert commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, championed by Eleanor Roosevelt, to recognize her contributions to women’s advancement and the advancement of human rights, to be performed on International Human Rights Day, December 10, 1998; now,
THREREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of the City and County of San Francisco hereby commends The Women’s Philharmonic.
