Here’s some news for this week!

Juilliard Focus Festival 2022, The Making of an American Music, 1899-1948 is taking place this week with much of it streaming.  The January 28 concluding orchestral concert will be conducted by Mei Ann Chen, and features Melissa White as soloist in Florence Price’s Violin Concerto n. 1!

Musicologist Dr. Leah Broad has a feature on the BBC about composers Avril Coleridge-Taylor, Dorothy Howell and Doreen Carwithen. Titled “Hidden Women and Silenced Scores,” you can listen in in here.

ICYMI! In November, Mirga Gražinyte-Tyla discussed the state of her career, including her decision to step down as Music Director of the City of Birmingham SO (instead she will be principal Guest Conductor); the impact of Brexit (which makes being an international conductor more difficult), and her role as a symbol of women’s progress in the field of conducting.  “A huge change has taken place and is still taking place. It is a fact and it changes our collective awareness. And I’m very happy about it.”
