Andreia Pinto Correia, composer

Let’s get your week going with some news!

On February 14, the American Composers Orchestra (ACO) and the American Composers Forum (ACF) announced the inaugural recipient of their new Sorel Fellowship, in honor of pianist, educator, and philanthropist Claudette Sorel. The fellowship is designed to “create opportunities or a mid-career woman composer to workshop and premiere a newly-commissioned orchestral work, as well as receive personalized professional development and support with booking new opportunities.” The fellowship lasts for three years, and will be offered every three years with funding from the Elizabeth and Michael Sorel Charitable Foundation. The award has been created after the foundation surveyed ACO and ACF composers, who responded that mid-career female composers had a particular need for grant funding and the opportunities that usually come with it.

Composer Andreia Pinto Correia has been named as the fellowship’s first recipient in 2025. Her recent commissions include Cortejo (L.A. Philharmonic) and Os pássaros da noite or “The Birds of Night” (N.Y. Philharmonic).
