I can think of no better way to kick off the new year than by attending what will no doubt be a fabulous concert that includes works by historic and contemporary women composers.
The Rhinebeck Chamber Music Society is presenting their concert celebrating women in music on January 18. The program will include works by Clara Schumann, Fanny Hensel, and Amy Beach – and, as an added bonus, Joan Tower, Victoria Bond, Paula Kimper, and Karen Lefrak will be on hand to introduce their works. The event features not only women composers but women performers, including The Kleio Quartet – a new group, already receiving high praise from Alex Ross.
The role women have played in chamber music throughout history is hugely significant. Parlor concerts were often the only acceptable performance venue for young women, as composers or performers. As WPA continues to encourage performances of symphonic works, it is also important to acknowledge and commend the chamber works that are also being heard. Well done to the Rhinebeck Chamber Music Society! I hope this is the first of many such concerts – goodness knows there is plenty of repertoire that can be included!
